JOB DESCRIPTION: Director, Research Informatics
This position will lead the Discovery and Preclinical Information Technologies team at Biogen Idec, reporting to the VP of R&D IT. The incumbent will…
- Partner with discovery and preclinical project teams in Cambridge, MA and San Diego, CA to provide innovative solutions that address the data analysis, information processing, and knowledge management challenges in drug discovery.
- Develop and own IT strategies for drug discovery and preclinical development.
- Define the process work flows and technology road maps related to Biogen Idec's small molecule, biologics, pharmacology, molecular technologies, analytical systems, cellular engineering, toxicology, and biomarker informatics platforms.
- Have operational responsibility for conceptualizing, designing, developing, and deploying discovery and preclinical databases and software solutions.
- Evolve existing work flows and data streams based on need and maturation of technologies within Biogen Idec.
- Partner with shared services and support teams in R&D IT and other parts of IT to optimize resource utilization for development and maintenance of major systems and ensure an efficient data processing infrastructure.
- Be the IT representative on the discovery leadership team and will use his/her understanding and anticipation of strategic and operational objectives to advocate for improvements in process, productivity and quality through the proper use of information technologies.
- Partner with his peers on the R&D IT leadership team to identify opportunities for process improvement, knowledge transfer, and reuse of solutions across the R&D value chain.
- Identify, evaluate, and engage external partnerships that can creatively enhance our internal capabilities.
- Represent Biogen Idec's interests in the discovery and preclinical IT space externally.
REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS: Director, Research Informatics
- In-depth knowledge of informatics and IT solutions in the discovery and preclinical space.
- Proven expertise in global solutions design, development, and production implementation.
- Excellent managerial and operational skills, combined with strong customer focus.
- Ability to effectively communicate with peers, upper management, and business partners
- Demonstrated ability to articulate and "sell” a vision for IT-enabled drug discovery.
- Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural project teams.
- Comfortable working in a matrix organization and managing by influence.
- Previous managerial experience in a similar industrial position preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to forge academic and commercial collaborations is a strong plus.
PhD with 7 years or BS/MS with 10-12 years proven industry experience. Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacology, or Computer Science degree(s) preferred.
