JOB DESCRIPTION: SCIENTIST - Instrument development
JOB SUMMARY:
Broadly trained scientist to conduct experimentation and measurement in a rigorous and quantitative fashion utilizing multiple experimental techniques. Investigate & develop new procedures under the guidance of a senior scientist or engineer, project coordinator, or R&D Manager. May act as lead scientist on one project & contributor to other projects. Interact with other groups and share information; participate in team activities. May supervise technical personnel.
CORE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: • Plan and execute assigned projects; utilize thorough technical and theoretical understanding of numerous laboratory techniques. • Apply advanced scientific knowledge to projects. • Execute experiments; participate in experimental design. Utilize DOE where appropriate. • Quantitative analysis of data. Evaluate results, form conclusions & provide/implement process or document improvements. • Utilize numerous analytical instruments; train others in their operation. • Recognize & resolve technical problems. • Maintenance, calibration and upkeep of laboratory analytical instrumentation • Utilize scientific (e.g. Journals) & industry (e.g.. FDA updates) literature to broaden technical & theoretical understanding. Actively use library services to conduct literature searches. • Familiar with lab environment & safety practices • Apply basic computer skills. (Includes word processing, spreadsheets, instrumentation related.) • Apply advanced technical writing skills to produce reports & documents
REQUIREMENTS - QUALIFICATIONS: SCIENTIST - Instrument development
SKILLS/SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, CERTIFICATION, LICENSES, ETC:
Strong orientation toward hands- on problem solving through experimental design, execution and observation using advanced scientific and molecular techniques (required).
The ability to organize experiments, process knowledge and data to invent new methodology.
The ability to think quantitatively, logically and creatively and be innovative.
The ability to provide technical assistance to scientists, technicians, non-technical staff and customers.
The ability to write manuscripts for professional journals and meetings.
The ability to use a personal computer and scientific software.
Broad working knowledge of any or several of the following a plus.
• Cell biology – Hematology o Staining and/or fluorescent labeling of cells o Cell imaging and image analysis o Quantitative manipulation of ultra small volumes o Basic hematology instrumentation or systems o Standard Molecular Biology techniques • Instrumental analysis o Fluorescence and UV-Vis spectroscopy of biological molecules (required) o Metrology of films and/or surfaces • Chemistry o Modification of surfaces, films or microparticles • Fluidics and/or Microfluidics o Behavior of biological molecules and cells in fluid paths o Design of fluidics paths and surfaces
• Consumables design • Implementations of technology in consumable format Ph.D. in a life or physical science; B.S. in a life or physical science with 5+ yrs. related lab/industrial experience; MS with 2+ yrs relevant experience. Direct laboratory experience with biological and/or blood required.
