JOB DESCRIPTION: Animal Care Supervisor II 158044 (NCI)

SAIC-Frederick, Inc.’s Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The LASP contributes to improving human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of research animals. The Animal Supervisor II is responsible for supervising animal care and technical employees engaged in the breeding, rearing, testing and housing of various species of laboratory animals (rodents). Duties include performing complex animal technical procedures, overseeing specimen collection, preparing reports, and ensuring production and labor costs are within budgeted parameters. Will prepare/coordinate the animal care staff’s work and leave schedules; resolve operational problems, such as inadequate supplies and equipment; audit records and logs for compliance with regulations; inspect the facilities and equipment; and interview, train and evaluate animal care staff. He/she will be responsible for ensuring that all operations are performed safely. Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous radiological, chemical and biological materials. The use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols is required. This is a change in facility. Working hours are from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent. AALAS certification. In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of six years of experience breeding, housing, testing or rearing laboratory animals (mice), and performing related technical manipulations required for the maintenance of laboratory animal colonies; including two years in a supervisory capacity. Ability to keep computer records, maintaining/updating data in computer-based applications/databases. Knowledge of: Standard Operating Procedures for animal facilities, and the basic requirements for maintaining laboratory animals. Ability to supervise and train lower level personnel, coordinate and prepare work schedules, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs. The use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols is required. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.

DESIRED SKILLS: A basic understanding of Mendelian inheritance in order to successfully propagate, maintain and ensure integrity of multiple, complex breeding lines. Complexity of breeding colony will require very detailed and accurate record keeping skills. Good organizational, observational and computer/data entry skills.
